Many departments at the University provide data and reports via the World Wide Web (WWW). Before taking that step, departments should consider the following:

• Determine:
  • The intended audience.
  • If the information is already available. Review Appendix C, "Public University of Minnesota Reports on the Web".

• Ensure that all of the information to be provided on the Web site is Public information:
  • Refer to this policy for information classification definitions, and see Appendix B, "Examples of Public, Private and Confidential Information".
  • If questions remain, contact the appropriate Data Custodian. Refer to this Policy's "Contacts" section.
  .
• If all information to be provided at the Web site is not Public information, or if there are other reasons to restrict access to University Community personnel (such as site license restrictions), consider whether the department will be able to maintain all legal and University requirements for that type of site, or whether alternatives exist.
  • Discuss whether the information could be provided and controlled through the University's Information Management Systems group. Contact the IMS Director at 612-626-0577.
  • Investigate the possibility of providing additional access security to restrict access to authorized University individuals. For further information, contact the Manager of Enterprise Internet Solutions at 612-626-8343.
