Use of the Equal Opportunity Statement.

The University of Minnesota Equal Opportunity Statement is required by University policy to be included in every University publication. With respect to job openings, it must be used in published advertisements in magazines and newspapers as well as on the job description itself.

We include the statement in job postings to obtain the widest possible pool of applicants by emphasizing the University's commitment to an open and fair search process. We also need to use this statement continuously to ensure that the community's awareness that this university is committed to the philosophy and practice of equal opportunity and affirmative action.

Three versions of the statement (long, medium, and short) are available (see below). These options provide flexibility, given the practical concerns of saving space on a printed page and keeping costs under control when advertising must be purchased. The long form is particularly intended for use in collegiate bulletins, employee handbooks and application forms. It is rarely used for hiring situations. The medium form is recommended for most other publications, and would often be used on the job description and in published job announcements. The short form is used on posters, and in cases of severe space limitations, or where cost would be prohibitive, in a published paper or journal.

Disability Accommodations

It is important for the University to be proactive about (1) ensuring disability access when appropriate, and (2) informing people with disabilities of the accommodations and resources available to them.

In the context of searches, it is not necessary to refer specifically to accommodations in advertisements. However, both of the following statements regarding accommodations should be included in all other communications to applicants:

  • To request disability accommodations, please contact (name, department, address, phone number).

    AND

  • This material is available in alternative formats upon request. Please contact (name, department, address, phone number).

For further information about how to provide the necessary accommodations, please contact Disability Services, University of Minnesota McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. SE Suite 180, Minneapolis, MN 55455, 626-1333.
